Course objectives

The Instructor Course teaches how to teach the ATLS Program. It covers all the aspects needed to understand and practice the established educational principles used in the ATLS Student Course.
 
Eligible to teach an ATLS Student Course

Course description

The Instructor Course is divided into seven sessions. Medical content is not presented in this course as it is in the Student Course. The majority of presentation are taught by a qualified ATLS Educator.
 
Course participants practice each type of teaching technique taught during the Instructor Course. Students are assigned a 5-minute lecture from the ATLS core content for presentation during the mini lecture sessions. These mini lectures are videotaped. The student's teaching techniques are evaluated through the use of videotaped session and observation of the Course Director, Educator, and the presenter's colleagues.
 
Course participants also practice their abilities to lead a group discussion through the use of the Triage Scenario. Skills-teaching abilities are practiced at assigned, abbreviated ATLS skills stations. During these sessions, participants also learn and practice critiquing skills.
 
Faculty for the ATLS Instructor Course are qualified, experienced ATLS Instructors. Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

Participants

The Instructor Course is open only to selected outstanding doctors of the Student Course.
 
Student Course participants must be identified as potential candidates to attend an Instructor Course based on their performance and attitude during their participation in a Student Course. The Student Course Director is responsible for informing the students in writing of their instructor potential status.
 
The applicant must satisfy the following eligibility requirements before participating in an Instructor Course.
  1. Having successfully completed an ATLS Student Course within 2 years
  2. Must have been identified as having fulfilled these criteria:
    1. Mastery of the Student Course content.
    2. Demonstration of commitment to the care of the trauma patient.
    3. Demonstration of commitment to the ATLS principles and philosophies.
    4. Demonstration of proper attitude of a model Instructor.
    5. Demonstration of effective communication skills.
    6. Willingness to serve as a faculty team member.

CME–Recognition

Swiss Society of Surgery (SGC/SSC) 12 points.

Fees

SFr 500.-
Course material, administration costs, lunches, beverages and a Course dinner is included. Accommodation has to be organized and paid by each participant itself
 
The Course Fee must be paid to the ATLS bank account eight weeks prior to the beginning of the Course the latest, however, only after receipt of the definitive confirmation letter. Four weeks prior to the Course at the latest you will receive all Course documents, however, only if payment has been received.

No registration form is available as this course is only accessible upon personal invitation by the Core Faculty.
